Fantasy sports have been with us for a long time. It’s changed quite a bit over the years, becoming more and more popular with the rise of fantasy sports websites like Yahoo!, ESPN, and NFL.com/fantasy. Now, esports fantasy games are even starting to see widespread use across games like League of Legends.

Metaverse is a relatively new type of virtual reality gaming that aims to immerse users into an alternate universe — where they can explore different realms brought by online internet media such as movies and video games through avatars or in-game characters. While not exactly the same, some could say that Metaverse is similar to the immersive experience of fantasy sports. Both Metaverse and fantasy sports have the ability to bring people together from all over the world, across boundaries of religion, race, language, and even gender. The thing that actually makes them similar is that users of both need a platform where they can stage their metaverse or fantasy sports games.

For instance, users may pay a certain amount of money to play on a Zelda -themed server in World of Warcraft. They may also choose their own characters on this server by selecting names and avatars as they would in any MMO or MMORPG game. When they are ready to participate, the users typically have a set time frame to play within their chosen realm and their skill levels will be decided by their own personal feats. If the players win, they gain in-game currency — which can be spent on items from the server store or traded for real-life money with other users. In this way, it’s very similar to fantasy sports — where players can gather together from all around the world to play games together inside one’s native gaming environment. It also helps that there are large potential audiences for both Metaverse and fantasy sports (especially Metaverse) as people love to spend time immersed in these types of virtual worlds.

It can also be argued that fantasy sports is a way of life, while Metaverse is a new way to experience life. Some users may value the comparative ease of fantasy sports and its social intangibility over Metaverse but that certainly doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate it as well. The two ideas aren’t mutually exclusive by any means and even if you are a fan of one, you can still thoroughly enjoy the other. Fantasy sports enthusiasts will likely find some interest in Metaverse as it provides them with another avenue to express themselves and their interests.

One could say that Metaverse and fantasy sports help each other grow by recruiting new users. In traditional fantasy sports, people not only play with their friends or co-workers but also recruit others from their extended social network as well. In many cases, people will play fantasy sports games with faraway relatives like uncles and cousins. This opens up a fun and exciting experience for the participants, who may not know each other in the “real world”. Players can also create sub-groups with interests such as hobbyists and have a great time together.

As with traditional fantasy sports, Metaverse will provide an easy way for people from all around the globe to connect and play their favorite games. As a result of this, a whole new generation of gamers and sports fans will be born.

In the future, Metaverse and fantasy sports will likely continue to grow together — especially as they become more mainstream. There is a lot more room for growth in both gaming platforms as well, making them both very appealing to investors in the near future.
