Top European football club secures a sponsorship exclusively based on Bitcoin
Netherlands-based PSV Eindhoven has become the first top-flight football club to sign a sponsorship deal solely based on Bitcoin. The agreement was reportedly made with Anycoin Direct, a Dutch crypto company. There have been a number of recent developments between the crypto and sports industries, the most notable being the Paris Saint-Germain/Lionel Messi contract deal, which includes payment of a percentage of his income in cryptocurrency.
PSV is one of Europe’s top football clubs. They have received many accolades throughout the years, and are known for their ability to produce talent that goes on to play for Dutch teams and even the national team. They have several players that have been involved in major international transfers, including Memphis Depay (F.C Barcelona) and Georginio Wijnaldum (Paris Saint-Germain F.C).
The deal, which is expected to last two seasons, is the first-of-its-kind given to promote cryptocurrency across Europe. According to PSV commercial director Frans Janssen’s statement “The potential and prospects that the world of cryptocurrencies provides are quite promising,” he says. As a club in the center of the Brainport region, we are always looking for new ways to innovate, and bitcoin fits right in.”
PSV will be paid 400,000 euros every season, according to the Dutch Eindhovens Dagblad. However, owing to Bitcoin’s high volatility, specified rules were established to ensure a steady flow of revenue in the case of a price drop.
