UEFA Conference League Weekly Roundup
This year’s conference league has been explosive and everyone is here to win.
It has proven to be a great stage for clubs to prove their mettle at the European level if they fail to qualify for the Europa or Champions League.
This exposure will surely give birth to more confident clubs that will eventually be playing in the bigger European leagues and help them match up to those standards.
There were quite a few notable performances from Group A. Istanbul Başakşehir defeated RFS 3–0 and almost crushed their hopes of making it past the group stage. Stefan Okaka, who has been their star and top goalscorer, managed to score a brace and prove his prowess once again. The second spot in the group is being taken by Fiorentina for now as they defeated Heart of Midlothian 5–1,
Group B was interesting as well as West Ham, the table toppers, have gone undefeated till now and won all their 4 matches. Their perfect record until now has been remarkable as they won 2–1 against RSC Anderlecht, with notable goals coming from Jarod Bowen and Said Benrahma.
In the second position in this group, we see Silkeborg IF, who managed to gain a 5-goal lead against FCSB and win their match too.
In group C, we have the Spanish phenoms, Villareal, who won 1–0 against Austria Wien, who are at the bottom of the group. Villareal sits tall at the number one spot in group C. The second match of this group ended 1–1, meaning the other three teams still have a shot at qualifying for the next stage.
Group D can be considered the group of death due to the fact that every team has an equal shot of making it through and no spot is confirmed yet. It is extremely necked to neck and it would be quite interesting to see who manages to qualify further. Nice and Koln have faced some resistance and have not been able to dominate as much as they would like to and stand close to the 2nd and 3rd positions with just a one-point difference, whereas Partizan is the table-toppers.
Groups E & F had some close games, and all the teams in these groups have been going at it, giving it their best. Most of the matches in these groups have been neck to neck, and the competition is really on this season.
Another action-packed and equally matched group is Group G, where the first and second teams are tied at 7 points apiece and the third and fourth teams are tied at 4 points. It is anyone’s group to take still, and qualification is not yet guaranteed here.
Group H had some action-packed thrillers as FC Basel drew 3–3 against Slovan Bratislava, taking them up to the first position, whereas FK Zalgiris won 2–1 at home against Pyunik Yerevan. Every team in this group is 1 point apart from the other, and it will be interesting to see which two teams make it through.
